The student movement that is now taking power emerged after the tragedy of November 1, 2024 in the Serbian city of Novi Sad. At that time, a concrete canopy collapsed at the train station. 16 people were killed. The tragedy sparked mass protests across the country, which later grew into a nationwide movement against the government and President Aleksandar Vucic, whom the protesters accused of corruption and power-mongering.

במהלך שנת 2025, סטודנטים ארגנו עצרות המוניות, חסמו אוניברסיטאות, כבישים ומוסדות ממשלתיים. מורים הצטרפו לתנועה, ובהמשך הצטרפו גם כל מיני קבוצות - אוהדי כדורגל, איגודים מקצועיים, פעילי זכויות אדם. עם הזמן הפכה תנועת הסטודנטים לכוח פוליטי והציגה רשימת מועמדים משלה בבחירות לפרלמנט - היריבה העיקרית של הסטודנטים הייתה מפלגת השלטון הסרבית הפרוגרסיבית, הקשורה לוצ'יץ'. המפלגה הייתה בשלטון אפילו 14 שנים: ב-2012 הוא הפך לסגן ראש הממשלה הראשון של סרביה, ב-2014 עמד בראש הממשלה, וב-2017 הפך לנשיא.
