Senator Flavio Bolsonaro beat incumbent President Lula da Silva in the first round. After the votes were counted, former president Jair Bolsonaro's son received 47.03% of the votes, while Lula received 45.16%.
The winner will be determined in the second round on October 25.
In 2022, Lula also reached the second round, where he defeated Jair Bolsonaro - the father of his current opponent. Bolsonaro Sr. was later convicted of attempting a coup after losing the election.
President Lula accuses his current opponent of receiving money from Trump, who was a close ally of Bolsonaro Sr. and sharply criticized the legal proceedings against him. Relations between the White House and President Lula are strained.
