British government sources confirmed to the BBC that the withdrawal was linked to events on September 27, when three suspicious vehicles were spotted near the base.

Six people were arrested in connection with the case, including British and Iranian nationals. All were subsequently released on bail.

The British air base RAF Fairford is used by the United States, including for recent operations against Iran.
