A US commander rejected plans to withdraw forces in Kuwait from Iran before an Iranian drone strike killed six US service members and wounded more than 20.

Most of the American troops in Kuwait had already been transferred to Jordan and Saudi Arabia before Operation Epic Rage. But Brig. Gen. Clint Barnes chose the Kuwaiti port of Shuaiba, about 65 miles from Iran, despite intelligence warnings that the site might be targeted.

Survivors and families say the unit had weak defenses and poor medical support. More than 20 Democrats in Congress are now demanding public hearings about the failures surrounding the attack.
