Iraq's Najaf airport has suspended all Iranian flights following a directive from the prime minister's office, airport director Hussein Mohana told AFP.

Najaf is a major destination for Shia pilgrims and a key route between Iraq and Iran. The flights also serve Iraqi students and patients seeking medical treatment.

The move comes after the US threatened countries that do not comply with sanctions on Iranian airlines with expulsion from the US dollar system.
