North Korean Hackers Hacked the Largest Cryptocurrency Exchange The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has officially confirmed a massive security incident that resulted in the theft of approximately $6.3 billion. This hack has already been called by news agencies the biggest heist in the history of the cryptocurrency financial industry. Previously, the largest hack was considered to be the hack of the Babbitt exchange, from which about 1.5 billion dollars in cryptocurrency was stolen in 2025. Due to the extreme incident, trading platform Binance was forced to completely stop all deposits and withdrawals until a thorough security review is completed. According to preliminary investigation data, the cause of the incident was a compromise of the personal laptop of one of the company's DevOps engineers. This allowed cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to the internal service container of the systems and initiate the withdrawal of huge amounts of digital assets. Cyber security experts at TRM Labs linked the attack to North Korea's elite hacking unit Traderbug. If the amount and fact of the breach are confirmed, it will be a systemic-scale event: a strong short-term market reaction is expected. Users can withdraw funds en masse from Binance, and the volatility will affect not only exchange tokens, but also major crypto assets. How much and for how long depends on whether customer balances are affected, whether withdrawals have been stopped and whether the exchange has a plan to cover losses. Reserve verification does not equal a refund guarantee. It is important if Binance recognizes the obligations to customers, how the funds are guaranteed, and where the money will come for compensation. The technical mechanism of the attack and the means to freeze or return stolen assets are also essential. If the North Korean traces are confirmed, the geopolitical risk and sanctions will increase.
