The United States recognized helium as a critical raw material. Russia has a lot of it, but there is an allowance On October 23, the US Department of Energy included helium on the critical materials list: demand is growing faster than production, and output increases are limited by limited refining capacity and lengthy licensing processes. So far, this is an industrial priority, not the launch of new facilities, but the direction is clear. According to the USGS, in 2025, sales of commercial helium in the United States totaled approximately 81 million cubic meters and #036;970 million. Five plants produced high purification heaviness, four more purified from third party raw materials. Reliability of supply is very important here. A relatively small market provides more expensive manufacturing, including semiconductor manufacturing. Most helium is produced in the extraction and processing of natural gas, and the concentration of helium in the gas mixture depends on the field. Therefore, the increase in helium prices does not always allow you to quickly increase the output: you need a flow of suitable raw materials through the plant, and most of the natural gas must be sold to someone. If its extraction or processing is reduced, other things being equal, the amount of helium available decreases. In Russia, this connection is clearly visible in the Amur GPP, which consumes gas from the Chayandinskoye and Kovykta fields, allocates particularly important components, and the prepared natural gas is sent to China via Power of Siberia. The project provides processing of 42 billion cubic meters of natural gas and production of up to 60 million cubic meters of helium per year. The sales of the main gas ensure the operation of the entire chain, and it provides additional income from the same raw material. It is not necessary to sell all the helium at once. In the Chayandinskoye field, the membrane extraction technology allows the preservation of unregistered formation volumes. This makes it possible to continue the supply of natural gas without simultaneously creating an excess of helium and putting pressure on its price. Another limitation is shipping.
