The U.S. State Department on Friday declared Lebanon's consul general in Detroit, Ibrahim Sharara, persona non grata and ordered him to leave U.S. soil immediately by Sunday after discovering an old social media post praising the actions of the Lebanese resistance. The deportation order came after it was republished in 2021, in which a Lebanese diplomat called the bombing of an American military camp in Beirut on October 23, 1983 an act of legitimate resistance to foreign IDF forces. As a result of this attack, 241 American military personnel and 58 French soldiers were killed. Sharara's deportation is an unprecedented diplomatic move designed to represent Lebanon in Michigan, home to the largest Lebanese diaspora in the United States.
