A scandal erupted in Kosovo after the eighth murder of a woman this year by her relative, despite her pleas for protection. Thousands of people have demonstrated in Kosovo in recent days over the killing of 49-year-old Arlinda Zakai, who repeatedly warned the authorities that her life was in danger. Zakai was killed with an ax on Sunday, allegedly by her former brother-in-law (who was estranged from her due to the violence he showed towards her). Three days before the murder, she sent an urgent letter to the prosecutor's office in which she wrote: "I hope the day will not come when you will have to answer for your actions only after taking my life." A few hours before the murder, she contacted the police again and complained about threats. This incident revealed a number of serious deficiencies in the investigation of her complaints and the implementation of protection orders issued against her. The killing resulted in the suspension of 19 police officers and two prosecutors, and the resignation of the national police chief, Gazmand Hoxha, who took moral responsibility on Friday. The protesters threw red paint on the government buildings and are demanding the resignation of the interior and justice ministers, but both ministers have so far refused to resign.
