Russia is exporting grain through the Arctic port of Murmansk for the first time, trying to circumvent problems with routes through the Black and Baltic seas. A first batch of 3,400 tons is already being loaded, and about 28,000 tons of wheat are ready for shipment to Morocco. This route was used during World War II, when the Allies supplied goods to the Soviet Union through Murmansk. According to analysts, Murmansk will be able to transport 0.7-1.1 million tons of grain annually, while more than 46 million tons previously went through the Black Azov basin. In addition, shipping grain by train from southern Russia increases costs by $18-25 per ton. Therefore, the new route will not be able to fully replace the traditional ports.
