Germany's Alternative for Germany party plans to present a plan for radical reform of the European Union, instead of leaving it. The plan, which will be presented by the president of the Joint party Alice Weidel in the European Parliament, involves turning the EU into a more flexible "federation of sovereign states", whose main goals will be a single market, border protection and security. The plan proposes to abolish direct elections to the European Parliament, limit the powers of the European Commission to administrative functions and replace the Supreme Court of the European Union with an intergovernmental arbitration body. If the reforms are not adopted, the party wants to hold a referendum on Germany's future in the European Union and on the euro. The plan represents a softening of the position of the AfD, which previously called for Germany to leave the European Union. The party aims to create a right-wing majority in Europe by 2029.
