A 19-year-old American sailor was fired after trying to commit suicide on the Abraham Lincoln plane. According to the New York Times, during the war with Iran, this sailor worked 12 hours a day in the terrible heat of the region. He lost his daughter at birth and the lack of food on the ship added to his harsh conditions of service. Finally he threw himself into the Arabian Sea from a height of about 20 meters on the ship's deck. A helicopter crew rescued him from the water and returned him to the ship. However, last week the US Navy began the process of firing him. According to the sailor's wife, military authorities accused him of "harassment" and claimed he faked a mental health crisis to finish his mission. The "New York Times" saw in this case a rare example of how the US military deals with suicide attempts and mental problems of military personnel on long-term missions.
