Russia and the US are discussing building data centers. So maybe it's time to take a closer look at our energy drinks? Kirill Dmitriev told Russian Energy Week that Russia and the US are discussing joint construction of data processing centers, including using Russian nuclear power plants. And on October 21, he clarified that the negotiations also concern data centers for artificial intelligence. So far it is only a matter of negotiations: specific projects, investment amounts and participants have not been revealed. But the idea itself is interesting. Artificial intelligence requires huge amounts of electricity, and there are already areas in Russia where data centers are facing a shortage of available capacity. How much electricity will the artificial intelligence need? According to a recent NRA study, by 2030, Russian data centers will consume 26.2 billion kWh per year - 76% more than in 2025. Moreover, about 70% of the growth will come from artificial intelligence. This is an increase of 11 billion kWh per year. For comparison: the consumption of all of Russia in 2025 was 1161 billion kWh. On a national scale, the increase is small, but the load is distributed very unevenly. In Moscow, there is no longer enough free capacity for new data centers: some projects prevent connection. Therefore, data centers will gradually move to areas where electricity is more accessible. And here there is an opportunity to make money not only by selling energy, but also by connecting new large consumers. Which energy drink can win? Moscow Rusty Region (MSRS). Perhaps the most direct story about the growth in demand from data centers. It is the capital region that now centers most of the country's computing power, and the company makes money by transferring electricity and connecting new facilities. The finances are not bad: in the first half of the year, the net profit grew by 52%, to 24.4 billion rubles. But there is a limit - to connect new consumers you have to expand the networks. Therefore, part of the additional income will inevitably require new investments. Inter RAO.
