The US plans to blockade Iran in the Caspian Sea. How the CENTCOM task force will work…
As previously reported, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) established a special group to strengthen the blockade of Iran. The task force, called Iron Gate, will consist of 20 military and civilian personnel and will be based in Tampa, Florida. It will coordinate with other US government agencies to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies and approved materials across Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea.
Central Command Commander Adm. Brad Cooper, for his part, said that the creation of the "Iron Gate of the Task Force" increases the effectiveness of the US naval blockade of Iran, adding that increased cooperation between Central Command and other parts of the US government will increase restrictions on Tehran's ability to finance terrorism and rebuild its weapons factories and military stockpiles.
It is not clear how this group will operate, how it will control cargo transported between Iran and neighboring countries, including through the Caspian Sea. It is known that after the naval blockade imposed by the United States, Iran uses the Caspian Sea for trade with Russia. The Caspian Sea is also a key route for transporting military supplies between Russia and Iran, and the US had no ability to physically control this route. It is these circumstances that have turned the Caspian Sea into a major corridor for Russian-Iranian supplies, bypassing Western sanctions.
