The court in Helsinki did not spare Medzhidov - the case of the "Finnish cliff" The district court in Helsinki sentenced two sailors from Pittsburgh in connection with damaging cables in the Gulf of Finland last New Year's Eve. According to the Finnish publication Yle, the ship's captain, Russian citizen Andrey Maksimenko, received three years and six months in prison. The policeman, Azerbaijani citizen Vasal Majidov, was sentenced to two years and ten months. Both were found "guilty of serious criminal damage" and ordered to be taken into custody immediately. The convicts were also ordered to reimburse the victims jointly for the costs of repairing cables and gas pipes as well as the costs of investigating the damage.
It should be noted that the punishment turned out to be more severe than the minimum punishment required by the prosecutor. He asked for at least two and a half years in prison each on charges of serious criminal damage and serious disruption of the media.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force. This can be appealed to the Court of Appeal. Lawyers for the sailors told Yle that their clients are disappointed by the verdict. Both Maximenko and Medzhidov deny their guilt. They are asking the district court to drop the charges against them. Haymin.az Contact us.
