Since its first detection in May 2026, the PJ.2.1 variant has spread across multiple continents, and as cross-border movements of people continue, the risk of it entering countries only increases. There is currently no published clinical evidence to suggest that infection with the new strain is more severe than other recently identified variants of SARS-CoV-2. The PJ.2.1 corona strain, which is distributed in Canada, the USA and Europe, may appear in Russia in the near future or is already spreading in the country, but has not yet been identified.
