Iran strongly rejected the sentences imposed in Kuwait on several people, including death sentences and life imprisonment, on charges of intelligence cooperation with Tehran and an attempt to assassinate Kuwaiti officials. The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Baka'i, defined the accusations as "absurd and baseless", and called on the Kuwaiti government to stop exerting pressure and harassing its citizens under pretexts such as identification with Iran. According to him, similar measures are being taken in Bahrain for political reasons. Baka'i said that they violate human rights and harm neighborly relations, and emphasized that Iran respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries of the region.
