China commercializes micro reactors using uranium-hydride-zirconium fuel Sichuan Nuclear Energy Company was established in China. A platform for the commercialization of microreactors, marking the transition of the technology from the laboratory to the engineering phase. The founders of the company with a registered capital of one billion yuan were the Sichuan Energy Development Group and the China Institute of Nuclear Energy. The main development is a microreactor with uranium-hydride-zirconium fuel and lead-bismuth coolant, created by the China Institute of Nuclear Energy. This is the world's first demonstration project of this type of microreactor. The reactor core is the size of a home refrigerator, and the entire system is placed in two or three containers and transported by road, plane or ship. Power - from 1 to 10 MW. One filling provides 5-10 years of continuous operation, and the construction cycle takes about 30 months. The main feature is built-in security. As the temperature increases, the response automatically fades: this is the physics of the fuel, not the automation. Thanks to this, the microreactor does not require external emergency braking and planning, which radically simplifies its deployment. This is what makes it suitable for islands, remote mines, offshore platforms, industrial parks and hydrogen production where there is no network infrastructure. The material is available on the Global Energy website "Global Energy" also on MAX.
