The number of registered unemployed increased during the year in 55 regions of Russia. According to the data of the Ministry of Labor, at the end of September 2026, 276.2 thousand people were registered in the employment services. The most notable annual increase in unemployment was recorded in the Yamal-Nantes Autonomous District - by 54%, to 1,100 people. In Mary El the figure increased by 33%, also to 1.1 thousand, in the Belgrade region - by 26%, to 2.4 thousand. An increase was also recorded in the Ivanovo region (+25%, to 1.4 thousand), as well as in the Crimea (+21%, to 4.3 thousand). At the same time, high growth does not always mean a worsening of the situation: in areas with a small number of unemployed, even a relatively insignificant change gives a considerable relative increase. The opposite dynamic is observed in Ingushetia, where the number of registered unemployed decreased by 68%, to 4.9 thousand people. However, even after such a decrease, the absolute figure remains higher than in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Mari El or Belgrade Region. This reflects differences between regional labor markets: in some regions growth is occurring from a very low base, while in others persistent employment problems remain. It is too early to talk about the beginning of a period of mass unemployment. Instead, we are talking about a cooling of the labor market after a long period of labor shortages and growing regional imbalances. At the same time, the statistics of the employment services cover only officially registered citizens and do not reflect the entire employment situation. Hidden unemployment is often created through reductions in working hours, wages, unpaid vacations, etc.
