The United States seeks to renew Russian gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine, and proposes to use energy cooperation as a tool to achieve a truce between Moscow and Kiev. The initiative was raised by American negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff in September. Washington hopes that Russia's return to the European gas market will become an economic incentive to stop mutual attacks on the energy sector. The proposed plan involves selling Russian gas through an American intermediary and depositing the proceeds into a special account in a third country. This would make it possible to limit the use of revenues by Moscow until agreements are reached. Ukraine, in turn, will receive transit fees. The supply through the Ukrainian gas transportation system was stopped in January 2025, although in 2024 15 billion cubic meters of gas passed through it. Unlike the damaged Nord Stream, this route can technically be restored much faster.
