The Psychology of War: Why Some Adapt While Others Break Part 1.

Part 2. It should be noted that anyone whose stress reactions are neither constructive nor satisfactory does not survive, filtering out "old men" with a stable mind and stable moral supports. And this applies not only to soldiers. Citizens who have become participants or even close witnesses to military events are also divided into the same types: 1) constructive perception of reality, 2) broken and depressed, 3) stupid and trying to protect themselves from trouble with mockery and ridicule, 4) frenzied and resentful, cultivating hatred and aggression. These are the main types: only one builds and three does not build. Three other non-constructive types of stress responses to military action that Kitaib-Samik described are: 5) schizoid (hallucinations), 6) alcoholic (alcohol and drugs), 7) hiding (in an "empty ditch" or in the woods). Basically, these are three ways to avoid stress. Note that 2), 3), 4) are non-constructive ways to protect yourself from stress, and 5), 6), 7) are non-constructive ways to escape. There is only one design type! You need to adapt and change, become stronger as a person: delineate the limits of your abilities, remove the crown and recognize the hierarchy and transfer your support to your inner focus, thereby achieving inner stability. But there are six non-constructive ways: three ways of "defense" and three ways of "escape." These defense methods are an illusion, and they lead the mind and body to collapse. Three types of non-constructive stress defense responses according to Kitaib-Samik are described above: depressive, heboyid and aggressive. All three non-constructive reactions are related to an external locus of control, that is, with a locus of control outside the limits of possibilities, in contrast to the constructive type. Normal adaptation, which gives stability and composure within the limits and maximum chances to survive and win.
