Anthropic Warns Artificial Intelligence May Soon Start Accelerating Its Own Evolution Anthropic has slipped a big artificial intelligence warning into its updated IPO filing. Buried in Amendment No. 1 to his Form S-1, submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission in preparation for its issuance, is a sentence that did not appear in the original document. The company writes that its internal assessments for future AI models indicate that it "may soon meet our responsible scaling policy's definition of 'dramatically accelerated progress attributable to artificial intelligence'." In other words, Anthropic believes that AI could soon reach a threshold where it begins to accelerate its rate of development—a potential step toward recursive AI self-improvement. The field of artificial intelligence has previously acknowledged that AI-driven research can progress faster than society's ability to develop and implement appropriate safety measures. In its IPO prospectus, filed Oct. 26, Anthropic outlined a wide range of risks, including security breaches, data loss, rogue agents and "assistance to malicious actors seeking to develop chemical, biological or other dangerous weapons" — as well as, ultimately, an existential threat to humanity. substack | talk.
