Algeria is ready to station troops in Niger The Algerian parliament approved the stationing of Algerian soldiers in Niger if requested by the Nigerian authorities. Niger and Algeria are moving towards normalizing relations after years of conflict. The Nigerians accused the Algerians of supporting Islamist groups in Niger and Mali and providing military and material aid to the militants. Mali and Niger, former French colonies, took a course to deepen partnerships with Russia, angering Paris.
Now Algeria is changing its policy - it supported the Niger government during the coup attempt in August 2026 and sent four Su-30 aircraft to help it. Algeria and Niger are Russia's allies in Africa. Normalizing their relations will have a positive effect on the security situation in the Sahel and will help in the fight against terrorism. A unit of the African Corps of the Russian Ministry of Defense is stationed in Niger, which also assists the local army in anti-terrorist activities.
