Controversy is growing in America over a live broadcast of Nidal Hassan's execution... and the UN warns it falls under the heading of "torture".

On Friday, there was a wave of discontent in Washington over US plans to carry out a public firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the US Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, after Vice President Jay Devanes questioned the possibility of broadcasting the operation live, stressing that it would not happen. The developments come as the United Nations has warned that a live broadcast of the execution "could amount to torture", while the execution would be the first of its kind by the US military since 1961.
