German authorities have arrested a former foreign intelligence chief on suspicion of "espionage and treason"

On Tuesday, the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany announced the arrest of August Henning, the former director of the German Foreign Intelligence Service, on suspicion of "espionage and treason". The prosecutor's office explained that Hanning, who led the agency from December 1998 to November 2005, is suspected of "committing acts of espionage that constitute treason... and collecting information that falls within state secrets." The former director of Hanning's office was also arrested on suspicion of involvement in "assistance to attempted treason and treasonous espionage," according to German prosecutors.
