Germany: The extreme right wins the presidency of a state parliament for the first time since 1945
A month after achieving a crushing victory in the elections over the conservatives, the extreme right in Germany, on Tuesday, won the presidency of a regional parliament for the first time since 1945, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. 48 deputies voted for the candidate of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party, Tobias Rausch, while 29 deputies voted against him, while 5 deputies abstained from voting. These results are unprecedented in post-war Germany, and are a strong blow to Meretz, whose coalition with the Social Democrats faces sharp differences over reforms.
