France: A new day of student protests amid tight security measures and calls for an investigation into "excessive repression"

France witnessed a new day of student recruitment on Tuesday, as tens of thousands of high school students prepare for a demonstration in about thirty cities, amid strict security measures that include the deployment of around 2,000 police and gendarmes in Paris, in light of a violent protest movement that threatens to spread to universities. The calls, backed by trade unions, came after weeks of clashes that have left more than 5,000 detained and 215 injured among students, while Amnesty International called on authorities to end "excessive repression".
