Tunisia reduces penalties on fake news law amid human rights criticism

Tunisia reduced the penalties set in Decree 54 to combat fake news, after President Kais Saied signed an amendment abolishing the five-year prison sentence and replacing it with fines, while maintaining imprisonment in case of recidivism. Human rights organizations and journalists partially welcomed the step, but saw it as insufficient to guarantee freedom of expression.
