Japanese company Fujifilm will invest 10 billion yen ($63.3 million) to increase magnetic film production fivefold by 2028, Nikkei Asia reports. The funds will be used to modernize a factory near Tokyo and produce drives with a capacity of up to 100 terabytes. The decision is driven by the growing demand for massive data storage from artificial intelligence systems, for which magnetic tape remains a cheaper and safer alternative to hard drives for long-term backup.
