Chinese scientists have created a toothbrush that kills all bacteria with current - its bristles generate micro-charges right while brushing. The bristles are made of PVDF piezoelectric material: when rubbed, they create charges that trigger the formation of reactive oxygen species. They, in turn, break down bacterial biofilms. In a three-month clinical study, this brush reduced plaque and gingivitis in volunteers. Piezo materials have already been tried for teeth whitening and antibacterial coatings on implants. Only now electricity has reached the most ordinary object in the bathroom. All that remains is to add RGB lighting.
