Qatar buys LNG from US to reduce export risks through Hormuz Qatar's state energy company, Qatar Energy, is buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US and other suppliers to reduce risks associated with traffic restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported, citing the country's Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the company's CEO Saad Al-Kaabi. "Qatar Energy enters into long-term liquefied natural gas supply agreements with the US and other suppliers as part of a strategy to create trade hedging and arbitrage that will generate revenue if future exports through the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted," the agency writes. In October, Qatar Energy announced that it had signed an agreement with American LNG producer Cheniere to supply 4 million LNG per year between 2031 and the end of 2054. "If the strait is closed, and this is the case we are counting on, there will be an immediate jump in gas prices and we will be able to generate income for QatarEnergy that would not have been generated otherwise," Al-Kaabi explained to Reuters.
