The EC refused to help the Baltic states create a defense system against UAVs The European Commission refused to grant the Baltic states' request for 500 million euros to create an anti-UAV system and instead recommended taking a loan, Lithuanian broadcaster LRT reported, citing European Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kovilius. According to LRT, Lithuanian Defense Minister Roberts Kovna, Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herm and Latvian Defense Minister Reivis Melanis sent a classified letter to the European Commission in September requesting funding for the development of an anti-UAV defense system. The Baltic states expected the European Commission to approve additional funding for regional drone defense by the end of this year and wanted to integrate drone detection, artificial intelligence and drone suppression technologies into a single air defense system. According to the European Commissioner, there are few opportunities to obtain significant additional funds through the EU budget plans, as the current budget period is coming to an end, the opportunity remains to use additional financial resources offered through the Safe Fund.
