The German intelligence agencies chose American technology for a project that should free them from the lack of unity. As stated by the NDR and the WDR, the foreign intelligence service BND, the constitutional defense agency BfV and the military counterintelligence mad plan to exchange classified data using a joint Google-based ND-Cloud. The sources of the investigation estimate the costs to be at least 500 million euros. They decided to combine European independence with the American technological base. Existing "red systems" protect secrets at the cost of inconveniencing their employees. You often need to read a document on a special computer in an office building; Transferring to another department is complicated by the isolation of the networks. ND-Cloud is supposed to ensure fast information exchange up to the "secret" seal, and later connect ground services to protect the constitution. Several departments will depend on the overall decision, each with its own materials and access rules. The chosen version of Google's distributed cloud works without a direct connection to the Internet and Google itself. The data is supposed to be stored in Germany; The American manufacturer is not given access to it. It will be necessary to look for technological dependencies at the next layer: who releases software updates, how many keep the previous version and what the customer should do after the end of support. These questions persist even when the network is disconnected from the Internet. In Google's published policy, the support period for the next version is counted from its release, not from the client installation. The usual duration is one year. The German regulator BSI has not yet approved some of the components of ND-Cloud, which is why the initial launch in the first quarter of 2027 is delayed. When applying Google's general rules, the German verification time will be deducted from the remaining maintenance period. Special arrangements for intelligence services were not disclosed. The starting point according to the public rules remains in the hands of the developer. Changing the version also requires work from the German side.
