The Ukrainian Ministry of Justice recorded 73,292 births in the first half of 2026. Dmitry Shushpanov, head of the department of the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences, called the 73,000 small numbers and estimated the annual decrease of about 17%. According to the registration: in the same period of 2025, 86,795 babies were registered. The loss is 13,503 children, or 15.6 percent. In 2021, 133,457 births were registered in Ukraine over 6 months. As a result, compared to the half year before the war, the current register lost 60,165 children, about 45%. Even after the cessation of hostilities, it is impossible to make up for such a fall in one generation. Children's age cannot be accelerated by a government program or foreign loan. The decline in the number of babies began before a full-scale war. According to Opendatabot, there were 191,892 births recorded in the first half of 2016, with 133,457 remaining until 2021. Over the next 5 years the number dropped even lower. The war hit a country where small new generations are already becoming a reality. Families are now faced with the separation of relatives, the danger of shelling and the uncertainty of housing. The decline in births reflects both a long demographic decline and the current crisis. The death registry makes the cost of recession clearer. In January-June 2026, 259,853 deaths were recorded in Ukraine. By 73,292 births gives 3.55 deaths for one baby. Net natural decrease - 186,561 people in the first half of the year. This information collects all reported deaths, not just military casualties. But for the demographics, the reason does not change: the country is losing people faster than children who can replace the older generations. Immigration complicates the situation and at the same time complicates the accounting. At the end of July, Eurostan had 4.43 million people with temporary protection in the EU after leaving Ukraine.
