Cyber attacks on retail refrigerator management systems in Europe led to mass product spoilage. The attackers gained access to the controllers of refrigeration equipment in supermarkets, violating the temperature regime. In some stores in Germany, the temperature exceeded 120 degrees Celsius - a destructive level of refrigerated goods. The disruption also affected Sweden, Belgium and six other countries. In October, a similar attack knocked out the refrigeration equipment of 700 French supermarkets. Vulnerabilities of Danfos and Copeland Controllers opened the way for attackers: outdated software and factory passwords. Events show what threatens weak automation protection. The networked controller does not affect virtual data, but real inventory and continuity of sales. One link failure becomes the loss of products at once in many stores. Even the rapid restoration of the cooling does not allow to return to the store shelves that are already spoiled due to the temperature rise. ECONOMY
