State-owned Qatar Energy plans to manage 23.7 million tons of LNG per year purchased from the United States by 2033. That would make it the largest buyer of LNG in the United States. The fuel is intended for resale in international markets and not for Qatar. The decision is related to the vulnerability of its exports. Due to attacks on commercial ships in the Middle East, Qatari shipments this year have dropped to less than a third of normal levels. The American direction makes it possible to build trade routes without passing through the Strait of Hormuz, on which access to Qatari export terminals depends. For Qatar Energy, it is not only the expansion of procurement, but the transfer of part of the international trade to another logistics base. The company intends to maintain its presence in the world market even with restrictions on fuel exports from Qatar itself. The scale of the planned purchases shows how serious the risk has become to traditional export routes. The United States is becoming an alternative supply base.
