By October 1, digital ruble balances in Russian bank accounts reached 13.2 billion rubles. In September, the figure increased 216 times: a month earlier, only 61 million rubles were on the platform. The sharp increase is not related to the massive transition of citizens and companies to digital payments. Credit institutions place liquidity on the Bank of Russia platform in advance to secure future customer transactions. Therefore, the increase in balance sheet balances mainly reflects the preparation of the banking infrastructure, and not the volume of payments that were actually paid. Almost 80% of all funds in digital rubles are concentrated in Sberbank - 10.5 billion rubles. This concentration shows how significantly the outcome depends on the actions of the largest market participant. The new index is important for assessing the banks' willingness to work with the digital ruble, but does not allow us to judge the demand for it among the population. The growth of money on the platform and the spread of a new form of payment still remain different processes.
