Shirashov RAS conducted large-scale bioacoustic monitoring in the waters of the Solovetsky Archipelago. They studied the effect of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals of the Solovetsky Bay in summer, the institute's press service reported. Scientists obtained data for research during the coast-to-sea expedition "Bloha of the Solovetsky Archipelago-2026", which took place in the summer of 2026. The basis of the work was State Assignment No. FMWE-2026-0005 "Influence of anthropogenic factors on beluga during the construction of the hydraulic whales of Solowsky Island and true Solowsky. The White Sea", initiated by the government in the context of active construction and large-scale renovation of the island's transportation and hydraulic infrastructure. For the first time, a large-scale monitoring of acoustic landscapes and the presence of beluga whales in the water area is carried out. And although during the construction of objects in the archipelago, this is the second season in which the method of driving vibrating piles is used, which is the most delicate in terms of acoustic impact on marine mammals. However, the scientists conducted four sessions of direct noise measurements at different distances and directions from the dip point of the pile. In addition, in three areas of the Solovetsky Bay, in the coastal area of the Tufi Archipelago, where seals create places of recreation in the summer, and in the breeding waters of beluga whales in front of the island of Cape Blue. Solovetsky scientists deployed an extensive network of passive acoustic monitoring. The total duration of underwater acoustic recording exceeded 6600 hours. At the same time as acoustic monitoring, observations were made on the state of marine mammals - complex work in the breeding aggregation of Solovetsky and accompanying ship surveys of marine mammals in the waters of the Solovetsky Archipelago. During the season, seven newborn whales were recorded.
