Key organizations of Russian Germans are recognized as "foreign agents". How this will affect German support for Russian Germans, DW investigated. The Russian association of non-profit organizations "International Union of German Culture" (ISNK), as well as the associated publishing house "Mawi Group", which publishes the Moscow German newspaper (MDZ), were declared "foreign agents". MSNK is the largest association of Russian Germans in the Russian Federation and has been operating since 1991. The Maui Group publishing house publishes books, textbooks and maps in German. Russian propaganda that day explained the authorities' decision by saying that MSNK "allegedly engages in anti-Russian activities and works for the enemy - Germany" and receives "huge funding from the German government." MSNK is accused of "stirring ethnic Germans to move to Germany", and the newspaper MDZ is accused of "formulating a critical attitude towards "NWO" (the Russian war against Ukraine). MSNK "plays a key role in financing and coordinating the cultural activities and projects of Russian Germans in Russia," Nikita Haidt, representative of the Berlin-based organization of Russian Germans Riwwel gUG, told DW. According to him, German cultural centers, language clubs, educational programs, scientific conferences and cooperation with researchers of the history and culture of the Russian Germans were supported through the union. The disappearance of this centralized structure "would deal a severe blow to a large part of the organized cultural life of the Russian Germans," Heidt said. Read more in the DW material.
