Hackers stole data from a third of the population of Moldova: what are the dangers? A powerful cyber attack on government digital services lasted from October 19 to October 23. Hackers gained access to the names and identification numbers of 750,000 Moldovan citizens, information about their families, driver's licenses, pensions, tax obligations, medical certificates and marriage certificates. The authorities had to temporarily close 82 government services and more than 30 information systems. Only on October 27 were the services fully restored. Bank card data was not affected, and no changes were found in the state records. However, fraudsters can use the stolen information: for example, they can pose as employees of banks or government agencies to lure card details and authorization codes. The National Crisis Management Center called on citizens to be vigilant and pay attention to messages and conversations and check the identity of interlocutors. The organizers of the attack have not yet been identified. Moldovan Prime Minister Vasil Tofan admitted that a wider campaign with the participation of foreign countries may be behind him. The head of the Electronic Government Agency, Nicoleta Kolometz, resigned after the incident. Tofan acknowledged problems in the work of five departments responsible for information technology and announced the adoption of several emergency measures, including the establishment of a national cyber security center through a US grant of 1.2 million dollars.
