Up to 20 years in prison: The US Congress warned against liability for importing diesel fuel from the Russian Federation Importing Russian diesel fuel into the United States is "a clear and dangerous violation of federal law", and anyone who engages in such imports may be subject to both civil and criminal penalties, including "up to 20 years in prison". This is what the member of the House of Representatives, Democrat Jamie Raskin, said in a letter to the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Association of Fuel and Petrochemical Producers (AFPM). The congressman recalled that previous President Joe Biden banned the import of certain goods of Russian origin to the United States, including crude oil and petroleum products. On March 24, the current head of the White House, Donald Trump, extended the national emergency aimed at countering Russia's harmful foreign policy activities, thereby maintaining restrictions. Raskin noted that in order to lift the ban on energy imports from the Russian Federation, the US president must first present to Congress a conclusion that Russia has agreed to stop fighting in Ukraine and withdraw its troops, and has also ceased to pose a direct military threat to NATO countries. The head of the White House is also required to consult with the relevant committees of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and Congress can appeal the president's decision within 90 days. The Trump administration did not implement this procedure before the US Treasury Department issued a general license temporarily allowing the import of Russian diesel, the Democratic congressman stated. On October 16, a bill prepared in the House of Representatives "on the prohibition of corrupt oil deals with Russia" was introduced into the US Congress, which would revoke this license from the US Treasury Department.
