Aliens may exist, but they are not a threat - unlike the Russian Federation, says the general of the Bundeswehr, the head of the Bundeswehr Space Command, Major General Michael Traut, in an interview with Stern magazine, said that he is "absolutely certain" of the existence of extraterrestrial life forms, but does not see a potential alien threat for which Germany will have to prepare. "We need to first prepare for man-made threats. And there are already a lot of them," Trout said. He specifically pointed to Russia's interference from the Kaliningrad region with GPS in the Baltic states, affecting air and sea traffic, and its disruption of the Viasat satellite system, which provided communications services across Europe. Additionally, in 2021, the Russian Federation destroyed its Cosmos-1408 satellite in orbit, resulting in hundreds of pieces of debris that would drift through space for decades. "This experiment proved what Russia is theoretically capable of - even against foreign satellites. And in recent years we have also had to discuss whether the Russian Federation is working on technology to put a nuclear warhead into orbit," Trout emphasized. In May 2026 it became known that the German government intends to invest 35 billion euros in ensuring space security.
