Serious dispute over the appointment of judges of the Constitutional Court in Poland.

Poland's president resorted to physical contact during the dispute over Constitutional Court judges. Now, four senior lawyers have backed the Prime Minister and demanded changes to the highest judiciary in this country.

In Poland there is an intense political conflict regarding the manner of appointing the judges of the Constitutional Court. The four former presidents of this court have now announced their support for the pro-EU government led by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

These four lawyers announced in joint statements that they consider the actions of Karol Nowrocki, the president of Poland, "an unprecedented violation of the independence of the court" and emphasized that his behavior will not help to resolve this conflict. In this statement it was said: "The judges that the Parliament duly elected to be members of the Constitutional Court took the necessary measures to restore the duties and status of this government institution; an institution that has a fundamental role for the rule of law and the protection of civil rights and freedoms."

This statement was signed by four former presidents of the Constitutional Court of Poland.
