🔶 Deepening the strategic relations between the European Union and Canada.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is pushing for Canada to obtain "partner membership in the European Union". However, due to the opposition of German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and several other EU member state leaders, these efforts have so far failed. Despite these obstacles, Canada and the European Union at least intend to form a "coalition for the future."
The purpose of this action is to create a unique relationship and connection that can reduce the dependence of both parties on other countries. In this context, both China and the United States are relevant. The policies of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, have undermined the confidence of Europeans and Canadians in the country that has traditionally been considered their most important ally.
The United States seems to be following this closeness of relationship very carefully. In his first response, Trump described the proposal to grant "associate membership" to Canada from the European Union as "ridiculous." He warned that if the rapprochement was seen as a "hostile act" and harmed American interests, he would face consequences. Trump has threatened to impose heavy tariffs or stop trade with Europe in many areas.
