🔶 Axios reported on Iran's plans to assassinate American officials.
The US government has warned of increased efforts attributed to the Islamic Republic to assassinate US diplomats and officials abroad. According to an information note, some of these projects have reached advanced stages.
The website Axios reported on Saturday, October 24 that it obtained a one-page memo addressed to Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, in which he warned of increasing threats to US officials and workers in the Middle East and other parts of the world.
Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence of the United States, called in this comment to provide more extensive information to State Department employees and suggested removing some of the sensitive information from the classified classification so that people at risk are aware of possible threats.
This warning was issued at the same time as the US diplomatic presence in several countries in the Middle East decreased. Washington previously ordered families and non-essential workers to leave its embassies in Saudi Arabia, and has now taken steps to reduce the number of workers in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Qatar and Jordan.
An American source told Axios that the assassination plans attributed to the Islamic Republic, along with the fear of expanding Houthi attacks in Yemen, were among the reasons for reducing the American diplomatic presence in the region.
These developments are taking place in a situation where American President Donald Trump once again raised the possibility of military action against Iran, although he also talked about the possibility of reaching an agreement with Tehran.
In this non-confidential one-page memo, no details are provided about the target persons and the possible location of the programs, and no independent evidence has been published to confirm the claims made.
