Despite the tightening of gun ownership laws in Germany, the number of people recognized as extremists by security agencies has increased and still have a legal license to carry or possess weapons.

The previous German government tightened gun laws two years ago to make it easier for authorities to revoke or prevent extremists from obtaining a license. However, the results of the North German TV NDR study show that the number of gun license holders among these people did not decrease, but increased.

According to the information provided by the German state ministries to the NDR network, by the end of 2025, more than 1,600 people classified as extremists will have a legal permit related to weapons.
