Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Navi Pillai South African judge Navi Pillai received the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her "efforts to promote international peace and justice", the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced. Continuing in the jury's statement, Pillai was said to have held governments and heads of state accountable, given hope to victims of violence and conflict and demonstrated an extraordinary moral compass throughout his long career. In 1967, as the first woman, Pillai opened a law firm in her home province of Natal. Afterwards, he defended the anti-apartheid activists, exposed torture and played a role in prisoners' rights. This 85-year-old judge served at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague from 2003 to 2008, and was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
