🔶 arrested two Latvian citizens at the US and NATO intelligence base in Great Britain

The British anti-assassination police have announced that they have launched a comprehensive investigation following the arrest of two Latvian citizens at one of the most sensitive air bases linked to US and NATO intelligence activities in the UK.

According to a police statement, security patrols found an abandoned car near Molesworth Air Base in Cambridgeshire in the early hours of Thursday (October 8). After investigating the place, the agents discovered a small breach in the security fence of the base and arrested two men aged 32 and 36 inside the area.

The judicial authorities and the police announced that these two people, who have the citizenship of Latvia and live in the UK, are being investigated by the anti-assassination forces on charges of illegal entry and trespassing into the restricted area for purposes contrary to the interests and national security of the UK. Active since World War II, Molesworth Air Force Base is currently a non-flying facility operated by the United States Air Force. This sensitive base hosts NATO's Intelligence Integration Center with more than 200 experts, as well as the headquarters of US intelligence operations in Europe and Africa.

These men were arrested just days after a major security incident at the Preford base. The incidents led to the arrest of seven people (including a dual British-Iranian citizen) on September 27, and as a result the US military decided to withdraw its B1 strategic bombers from this base.

Helen Flanagan, head of the UK's anti-assassination police service, said that although there is currently no evidence of a direct link between the incident at the Molesworth base and last week's incident at the Praford base, investigators are looking at all possible scenarios.
