"Shakapa" by Shida Bazar won the "German Book Award".
The jury of the "German Book Prize" considered Shida Bazar's novel "Cracks" a work that paints "a broad view of the history of Germany in the 20th century."
The jury's statement said the novel reflects almost a century of German double life through the fate of individual characters.
"The Rifts" deals with fictional villages in Hunsrock. Béziers follows 90 years of German history. The subject of the book are the people who shaped this village over time: Jewish families, the profits of the Nazi regime and Iranian refugee families. According to the jury, this novel challenges the boundaries of the "patriotic novel" (heimatroman) and redefines it with its transnational perspective.
