The death of a 28-year-old technician at an anti-epidemic research institute in Irkutsk, Siberia has prompted Russian authorities to implement sweeping health measures. Several hospitals, including a children's hospital and a maternity hospital, were quarantined and about 200 people who were in contact with the woman were transferred to medical supervision.

Russian authorities have declared the cause of death as "pneumonia" with an unknown cause and say there is no evidence of an epidemic or laboratory accidents. Rumors published on social networks about the breaking of the test tube containing live bacteria were also not confirmed.

However, due to the nature of the institution's activities, the possibility of a pneumonic plague attracted much attention. This type of plague can be passed between humans through respiratory droplets, but can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed quickly.

The local authorities stated that so far no new cases have been reported and the situation is under control. The exact cause of the technician's death is still under investigation.
